The native population of Sri Lanka basically belongs to two distinct categories: the Ethnic Group and Religious Group.

The Ethnic Group:
By ethnicity, the people of Sri Lanka fall under four groups: the Sinhalese, the Tamils, the Muslims, and the Burghers. The first ones are the largest group in the country. The Sinhalese are believed to be migrated from north India during 500 BC. They are the followers of Buddhism. The Tamils have their origin in south India. Hinduism is dominant among them. The Muslims of Sri Lanka are found under different heads: Sri Lankan Moors, the Indian Moors, and the Malays.

Religion
In Sri Lanka, Buddhism leads the religious belief. Islam and Hinduism follow the lead with a huge gap. Christians are also found in the island nation.

Education
The 2003 reports announce that the literacy rate in Sri Lanka is 92%. Religious education dominated the scene before the Europeans set up an organized school system for elementary education. Medical colleges and Law institutes made their way through soon to contribute to the academic arena.
