The city of Galle is situated in the southern coastline of Sri Lanka. Galle is one of the best specimens of a fortified city built by Europeans in South and Southeast Asia. As a result it is an amalgamation of the between European architectural styles and south Asian traditions.

Places of interest in Galle:

Dutch Fort: Originally, the fort was built by the Portuguese rulers with the objective of a defense mechanism from the natives. When it was overtaken by the Dutch, they made some improvements and added to the shielding value of the fort. Today, it is a major tourist attraction where the feel of the Dutch still can be found.

The churches: The oldest Protestant church in Sri Lanka- Groote Klerk is located in Galle. Apart from this iconic church, one can pay a visit to the New Dutch Church located on Church Street. It was built in 1754 and houses some hatchments and engraved tombstones.

Ahangama / Midigama: Travelers looking for some scenic landscape can always head towards this part of Galle. The exotic sunset in this place happens to be the highlight for the travelers. Surfing is another activity that can be undertaken here. The special method of silt fishing is also a trade mark of this region.

Miscellaneous: The heritage buildings and mansions are some of the must visits in Galle. The museum turned mansion on Leyn Baan Street is one place that demands a visit. With its vintage furniture, décor and aura, New Orient Hotel on Church Road is another establishment that holds the distinction of being the oldest hotel in the nation. It is in existence for over 300 years.

How to reach Galle:

It is well connected to the Bhandarnaike Airport of Colombo. From the airport, a traveler can board either a bus or hire a taxi to reach Galle. Being a major international port, Galle is also accessible through the sea route.

History of Galle:

Sinhala dynasty ruled Galle in the past before it came under the reign of the Portuguese rulers. Then came the Dutch period. However, it was over taken by the British when they defeated the former with the passage of time.
