Food

The stapled diet of Sri Lanka is rice and curry, both veg and fish based. The food is basically spicy and is cooked with coconut milk. Fish dishes are a local specialty with a wide range of sweets, coffee, tea and other beverages.

Rice:
The main food of the country, rice has different varieties in Sri Lanka. A variety of yellow rice, made of coconut milk is cooked on festivals. Another popular type- Samba is also taken on some special occasions. Kiribath or milk-rice is also a house-hold name in Sri Lanka.

Curry:
Curry is everywhere- vegetables, fish or meat. Coconut milk and herbs are the base of the delicious curries. Chilli powder, fresh chillies, cinnamon, tumeric, curry powder, curry leaves, onions, garlic and ginger are the prime ingredients of it.

Fish Dishes:
Enjoy the myriad fish items in the coastal region. The most popular of them are- Mallung, Sambol, Lamprais, Buriyani and Polos Pehi. At the same time, prawns, crabs and lobsters also find a place in the menu.

Drinks
Tea, being a major food product, is one hallmark drink of Sri Lanka. The flavour is enhanced with the addition of some crushed ginger. Coffee is also popular here and there. Don’t miss out on the coconut water available in local markets. Traditional intoxicating drinks include- Toddy and Arrack.
